Shower Thoughts: Is Water Wet?!

by Kelley Dodge

Short answer: depends who you ask. Long answer: also depends who you ask, but with more yelling.

See, this isn’t just a question. It’s a trap disguised as a conversation starter. The kind of thing that makes you stare blankly at tile grout mid-shower while ignoring that your family has been waiting in the car for the last hour.

Let’s break it down so you can get back to your life.

The Science-y Part

Technically speaking, wetness refers to a liquid’s ability to cling to a solid surface. So yes, water can make something wet. A dry towel? Wettable. A paper napkin? Soaked. Your sock after stepping in a mystery puddle? Physically AND emotionally ruined.

But can water make itself wet? That’s trickier. Water molecules are already surrounded by other water molecules. It’s like asking if a crowd is crowded. Or if soup is soupy. Sort of a semantic loop-de-loop that brings us to...

The Real Problem: Language is Dumb

This whole debate is less about physics and more about the weird ways we use words. It’s the same reason people argue over whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. (Spoiler: it’s both. Sort of. Actually, don’t ask.)

So if you wanna rage about anything, rage at the English language. Take it up with Merriam-Webster. Or write a manifesto on the back of a soggy napkin and call it a TED Talk.

Our Take?

We’re not here to solve philosophy. We’re here to make kickass body wash. But while you’re sudsing up and spiraling, just remember:

  • Water may or may not be wet.

  • You, however, should definitely be clean.

  • And if you’re going to have an existential crisis in the shower, at least smell good doing it.
