Natural Deodorant Guide For Men: How & Why You Should Switch

6 minute read.

If you were to read the label on the deodorant stick in your cabinet, there’s a likely chance that somewhere in-between the lines you’d see some science-experiment-looking words: aluminum, aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex, and multiple other variations.

Many deodorants use aluminum as an ingredient, and here’s why.

Its job is to block sweat pores so you can avoid walking around all day with those embarrassing pit stains— this unnatural blockage won't happen with naturally derived deodorant. And by the way, those yellow pit stains you may see come from your body expunging aluminum (that color is not normal with sweat stains).

Every Man Jack isn’t the type to get involved in heated debates, and there’s a lot out there when it comes to the aluminum vs. aluminum-free debate. But what we can do is give you reasons why an aluminum-free deodorant is a great option if you don’t want chemicals clogging your sweat glands, and why you should make the switch. Let’s take it from the top.

What is Natural Deodorant?

Natural deodorant is exactly what it says it is...deodorant made with ingredients that come directly from nature. No harsh chemicals, no parabens, no aluminum to screw with your body’s natural functions (aka sweating and smelling...like the active outdoor dude that you are).

If you haven’t noticed yet, we love what the earth has to offer us, and so do our bodies. The feeling of powerful, clean ingredients under your arms is immediately noticeable, as is how easy it easy to actually read and pronounce them. From arrowroot powder, charcoal, and kaolin clay to baking soda, coconut oil, and tea tree oil...these are a few (among many) vegan powerhouses that absorb moisture while fighting off odorous bacteria, all without messing with or clogging up your sweat glands.

Even your body has evolved to feel comfortable with these naturally derived formulations, quasi-rejecting ingredients that are unfamiliar or potentially unsafe.

For instance, Every Man Jack deodorants use a blend of cotton extract and witch hazel to help absorb wetness and crush odor-causing bacteria. Witch hazel is an oil-absorbing astringent and one of its great properties is its ability to absorb wetness from under the arms. Combine these powerhouses with essential oils that give off outdoor-inspired fragrances, and you have yourself your new favorite deo.

Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant - Sweat Blocking, or Odor Blocking?

What’s the difference?

Antiperspirant reduces how much you sweat, while deodorant masks body odor. A lot of antiperspirants use aluminum to do the whole pore-blocking thing as we mentioned above, and that’s a no-go for us.

Odor-blocking deodorants function a little differently. Instead of stuffing your pores with aluminum particles to prevent your body from expelling sweat to cool you down, we focus on making sure your body can still sweat, but smell good while doing it. Our deodorants contain antibacterial ingredients like lichen extract, which helps to kill those pesky odor-causing bacterias at the source.

You sweat for a reason, and that reason is that you work hard. Don’t deny your body the privilege of sweating, but also don’t allow yourself to walk around smelling like hot garbage.

The answer? An aluminum-free deodorant with an amazing smell to match. Think eucalyptus, mint, heck, even something subtle like vanilla if that floats your boat.

Every Man Jack deodorant gets the same job done as any aluminum-based deodorant, but it keeps you smelling pretty freakin’ good without the added chemicals or alcohols. The decision is a no-brainer.

Why You Should Use Natural Deodorant

So, you’ve made it this far, and we kinda get the feeling that you’re the type of guy who doesn’t really want weird, unknown chemicals all up in his pits, or anywhere on his body for that matter. That’s why you should make the switch to natural deodorant, or something at least naturally derived.

We’ll give you four good reasons why you should upgrade from your old high school deo to something made with natural ingredients for men like you.

Aluminum-Free

We’re crushing odors without aluminum (aka not screwing with your body’s natural functions). What we are using, though, are powerful, clean ingredients that you can actually pronounce.

Odor-Free

Our deodorant keeps odors at bay, so you can give your all during your workout, hike, or ride without the ripeness (you know the kind). Plus, we do it with outdoor-inspired scents like Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Citrus so you can smell fresh all day long.

White Mark-Free

You know those annoying white deodorant marks that always appear after putting on your shirt? Our deo doesn’t do that. Nor does it cause irritation like a lot of drugstore sticks do. We got you, man.

Cruelty-Free

Yep, that’s right. We’re certified cruelty-free by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Organization (PETA) and therefore our deodorants (and our entire inventory of products) are never tested on animals. They are absolutely tested on weekend warriors, though.

Propanediol vs. Coconut Based Deodorants

Every Man Jack offers Propanediol-based and Coconut-based deodorants. Propanediol is a sustainable, skin-friendly alternative to propylene glycol and is used as a base for many of our deodorant products. Additionally, Propanediol-based deodorant is more similar to traditional deodorant in the way it is applied to the skin - directly to the underarms as needed.

Coconut-based deodorant includes Shea Butter, which has rich oils that soak into the skin, creating a barrier that seals in moisture. Additionally, Coconut-based deodorants should be warmed under the arm or held onto the skin for 5-10 seconds to allow the product to soften.

When it comes down to it, your choice of deodorant is up to you. Different deodorants work better for different people, both performance-wise and for those who may have sensitive skin. Do you like a stick, or does a dry spray formula work better for you? How about something fragrance-free to really negate any stinging or irritation? Lucky for you, we’ve got them all. Find what works for you and stick (no pun intended) with it.

Nothing Comes Easy, Right?

So you've decided it's time to make the switch to an aluminum-free deodorant - great! With the switch, your armpits may take a minute to adjust. Not to worry, here's what you to expect:

  1. When you remove the 'plug' of aluminum, your body is going to start releasing what's been blocked, which may lead to a little B.O. here and there.
  2. Aside from a little excess odor during this period, you can also expect that you will sweat more than usual. This is because your body is ridding itself of the toxins that have built up over time. To be clear, we're not saying your armpits will be leaking like a fire hose, but you can expect to sweat a little more than you may be used to.
  3. Everybody reacts differently, but for some people, this detox period can last around two weeks. It's totally normal.

What's Next?

Hopefully we’ve helped convince you that aluminum-free deodorant (or all products for that matter) is the newest addition to your grooming routine.
